Accessibility Statement

This is an accessibility statement from Columbus Lab, University of Virginia.

Measures to support accessibility

Columbus Lab is reviewing website accessibility audit findings and making improvements to enhance usability and accessibility for visitors with disabilities. This work includes identifying and addressing barriers in website content, navigation, images, and interactive elements.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for improving web accessibility. They include three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.

Columbus Lab is using WCAG 2.2 Level AA as a reference for its accessibility improvements. The website is currently partially conformant: some content and features do not yet fully conform. The current status is based on an automated accessibility scan and ongoing review; a complete evaluation, including further manual testing, has not yet been completed.

Feedback

We welcome feedback on the accessibility of the Columbus Lab website. If you encounter an accessibility barrier, please contact us:

We will make reasonable efforts to respond to accessibility feedback. Please do not rely on a specific response time unless the lab has confirmed that it can meet one.

Technical specifications

Accessibility of the Columbus Lab website relies on the following technologies working with web browsers and assistive technologies:

  • HTML

  • WAI-ARIA

  • CSS

  • JavaScript

Known limitations and alternatives

An automated accessibility scan conducted on November 5, 2026 identified potential accessibility issues on the website, including:

  • Text elements whose importance may not be communicated correctly to screen readers.

  • The way the primary content area is identified.

  • Navigation landmarks, including slideshow navigation.

  • Some graphics and elements that may be unnecessarily exposed to assistive technologies.

Some website structure and interactive elements are generated by the Wix platform. The specific causes and appropriate fixes are being reviewed. Columbus Lab is inspecting the flagged elements, making appropriate improvements through the Wix editor, and conducting further accessibility testing.

If you have difficulty accessing website content, please email columbus@virginia.edu to request assistance or an alternative way to access the information.

Assessment approach

Columbus Lab assessed the website using an automated accessibility scan with AccessScan. Findings are being reviewed and corrective updates are being made through the Wix website editor. Further testing, including manual review, is planned as improvements are implemented.
